The Story of Exmoor Cliff Retreat

Perched above Lynton and Lynmouth on the edge of Exmoor National Park, Exmoor Cliff Retreat has been part of the area’s story for well over a century.

Built during the Victorian era – when Lynton and Lynmouth emerged as one of Britain’s most fashionable coastal escapes – the house has watched generations of visitors fall in love with Exmoor’s dramatic scenery, fresh sea air and restorative atmosphere.

The property also shares a unique connection with the famous Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway through former owner Bob Jones, who played an important role in helping preserve one of North Devon’s most iconic landmarks for future generations.

Over the decades, Exmoor Cliff Retreat has welcomed holidaymakers, walkers and travellers from around the world. For many years it operated as a Christian guesthouse and retreat, offering hospitality, rest and renewal in this remarkable corner of North Devon.

While much has changed throughout its history, the essence of Exmoor Cliff Retreat remains remarkably familiar – a place where people come to slow down, reconnect and experience one of England’s most beautiful coastal settings.

Today, that story continues, with each new chapter shaped by the guests who pass through its doors and the memories they take home with them.

Robert Walshe & Richard Robinson - The Hosts Behind Exmoor Cliff Retreat

At the heart of Exmoor Cliff Retreat are Robert Walshe and Richard Robinson, whose shared commitment to detail, consistency, and genuine hospitality shapes every stay.

Richard’s career in hospitality spans some of Northern Ireland’s most recognised hotels, alongside his role as Director of Accommodation at Queen’s University Belfast. With a deep-rooted understanding of guest care and operational excellence, he brings a calm, assured presence that ensures everything at Highcliffe runs effortlessly.

Robert’s background is in media and brand building, having anchored prime-time radio and led the launch and growth of some of the island of Ireland’s largest commercial radio stations as Managing Director. That experience translates into a strong sense of identity, atmosphere, and consistency — shaping Highcliffe into a place that feels considered, polished, and quietly distinctive.

Together, they have created a 5-star adults-only experience where guests can truly switch off — enjoying sea views across Lynton and the Bristol Channel, thoughtfully curated interiors, and an award-winning breakfast that has become a highlight of the stay.

Their approach is simple: combine instinct, experience, and attention to detail to create the kind of stay they would expect themselves — relaxed, refined, and effortlessly well looked after.

The Team Behind the Experience

Behind every seamless stay at Exmoor Cliff Retreat is a small, dedicated team who take genuine pride in every detail.

Sarah, our Head Housekeeper, joined us three years ago bringing a wealth of hospitality experience and an instinctive eye for presentation. Her standards are exceptional, and her seasonal flower arrangements have quietly become a signature part of the Highcliffe experience.

Nikki, our newest housekeeper, has settled in effortlessly and already feels part of the family. She brings a natural warmth, meticulous attention to detail, and a genuine appreciation for the house that shows in everything she does.

Wayne, our gardener, has also been with us for three years and plays a key role in shaping the look and feel of Highcliffe throughout the seasons. From maintaining the grounds to introducing new ideas each year, he takes real pride in the outdoor spaces — happiest when outside, admiring the views he helps to frame.
